OUR HUMBLE TRIBUTE AND REMEMBRANCE

Dedicated to the memory of, and in eternal thanksgiving to, the deceased members,
friends, supporters, and benefactors of Karilagan Dance Society.

Dr. Remedios T. Borromeo

Dr. Remy Borromeo, since putting up the Karilagan in 1971 has been known to the Filipino community in Edmonton as a very strict mentor. Her unique talent, though in teaching folk dances and songs paved way for the Filipino community to be known in Alberta especially to the Senior Citizens who were always delighted watching the Filipino folk dances. She brought the Filipino culture through folk dances and songs to the lives of the Albertans and made them adore our culture.

Azucena Molo (1939-2007)

Cena, since 1997 has been one of our dedicated members who continuously put Karilagan on the map.

As a long time volunteer, her unselfish dedication, kindness and honesty are the strength that bind the Karilagan families in unity. She will always be remembered with her untiring volunteerism every Heritage Festival in Edmonton at the Philippine Pavilion.

She suffered from a sudden stroke and passed away on February 19, 2007.

Marcelino "Chino" V. Dela Torre (1950-2007)

In a short period of time, Chino played many important roles to the continuous success of the group. Since joining in 2004 as a volunteer member, he held different positions, as a Choir Director, member of the editorial board of Philippine Hiyas, Adviser of the Karilagan Board, performer and guitarist.

His unselfish dedication and having more beautiful dreams for the group vanished with his untimely death. But his memories will always be the strength that will make the Karilagan Dance Society reach high for its goals. His unconditional friendship, humbleness, unique talent in playing the guitar and being such an approachable person will remain in the minds and hearts of Karilagan.

He was diagnosed with lung cancer in June 2006, but died of pneumonia on January 11, 2007.

Primaglor "Rio" S. Cochingco (1962-2014)

Picture
Since 1990, Rio was the main runner of the Karilagan Dance Society in the Philippines, looking and buying props and costumes from northern to southern part of the Philippines, delivering them to the house of any Karilagan member who was flying back to Edmonton.

She also shared her artistic talent by making our jewelry head pieces and making sure costumes were properly color coordinated.

She succumbed to chondro-sarcoma, cancer of the cartilage on June 13, 2014 after four years of battling the BIG C.

Gaudencio "Pepe" Mones Malbog (1944-2014)               Leonardo "Len" C. Molo (1938-2018)

Picture
Pepe, who was known "Papang" to many of us, was a firm believer of the mission of the Karilagan Dance Society. He was always there to lend a helping hand, opened his house to many of our props making and meeting sessions. Since 2001, Karilagan had used his garage to store other Karilagan costumes, jewelries and props. We also used his garage to store copies of Philippine Hiyas before they get delivered.

Papang died of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) on November 19, 2014.

Picture
He was known to the Karilagan families as Lolo Len.
He joined Karilagan in 1996 as a volunteer member and later on became a long time adviser.
He helped and led the yearly props making sessions of the group sharing his artistic talent.

To date, his art works are still a part of the group's performances. He was with us on our out of the country performances, one of the HIYAS(Gem) Award initiators and one of the editors of the Philippine Hiyas newspaper.

Lolo Len left us on July 4, 2018.
